hey, I'm MARISA
Art runs in my family—a colourful thread weaving through generations. My great-uncle was none other than the Dutch artist Jan Broeze, and the creative spark didn't stop there. It flickered all the way down to uncles and cousins who also painted, and, of course, me.
I vividly remember being 5 years old, meticulously colouring from a chippie packet, and taking home the trophy in a Simba Chippie colouring contest. In school, while I concentrated on the ‘important’ subject, my favourite was always Art class—I was totally in my element.
But here's the quirky part: despite my passion for art, I never once pictured it as my future job. It just wasn't deemed a profitable career path back then. Luckily I decided last minute to follow my passion as closely as I could at the time and landed a degree in Graphic Design.
My career's been a bit of a journey too. I started off in print production, quickly moved over to the hustle of ad agencies, and I even donned the hat of a marketing manager in the corporate world. When my first baby arrived, I decided to leave corporate and start my own creative studio, Chillipink, doing freelance graphic design. This gave me more flexibility and allowed me to be a present mom for my now two kids.

My family
Between you and me, there was always a sense that something was missing. While working in the creative industry, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I wasn’t fully living out my creative passions. I missed creating art with pen, paint, and paper—the kind of art that brought me pure joy as a child. That tiny voice grew louder over the years, but between running my studio and caring for my family, I never seemed to have the time or the space to explore how I could bring that back into my life. That is, until I discovered surface pattern design.
Now, 20 years into my career, I’ve found my next chapter—incorporating surface pattern design into my work. It feels like the perfect bridge between creating art and using the design skills I’ve honed over the last two decades. It brings me closer to that childhood sense of creative freedom while allowing me to keep growing as a designer.
